Grow them long, wear them proud, and for God's sake keep them waxed!

Well its September again and that can only mean one thing - its time to spend a month celebrating your manliness with a bunch of friends, a few strangers, lots of cops, Wilford Brimley and the rest of the mustache loving world.

Everybody is welcome to participate in Mustache Month and even to post comments. Both can be done without getting permission from me. If you want to post an article or be listed on the side under "Proud Participants & Fans" you'll need for me to add you.

WARNING: While growing a mustache will provide you with instant machismo and camaraderie with the 46 other guys with mustaches, its not without risks. The sudden apprearance of a mustache has been know to cause intense jealousy amongst "significant others" as they struggle to deal with the increased attention you'll receive as you strut proudly about with an impecably groomed upper lip accessory.

Missoula Mustache Fest 2008 Pictures

And now, by popular demand, photographs!

More here.

Montana Mustache Championship

Since there were only two of us here in Seattle competing this year (mostly because we seem to work with a bunch of weenies and losers), Adam and I were forced to travel a thousand miles to meet with other like-minded hirsute individuals in Missoula Montana. We got into town at about seven and immediately set out to impress every watering hole in town with our amazing facial hair. We may not have hit every bar, but those we did visit will long tell the tail about the three mysterious mustachioed men who drank all their liquor and shamed all their male patrons. Long after we're gone, children will ask their mothers: "Mommy, tell me again about the time three giant men, with hair like wild beasts, visited your bar and punched out every man and made every woman swoon!"

Well, I'll leave that story for others to tell. I'm just here to talk about the scores. It was a hard-fought battle, with the lead changing hands several times over the weekend. During our visit to Red's, we got the vote of not only the only waitress, but a table of women mesmerized by our whiskers. Because the rules clearly state that only waitress votes count, I cannot, in good conscious, include this vote, but it is included here for your edification.

I therefore modestly announce that the winner for the 2008 Mustache Month: Missoula/Seattle division is...ME! Tom Ovendale! Long may I reign!

Mustache Round Up Slated for this Weekend!

To end what has been an exceptionally long "month" of having mustaches, I'm fixin' to host the ending celebration this weekend for a few remaining Montana mustaches and a few visiting Dudes from Seattle. No doubt we'll be making those California Cowboys look like a bunch of two-bit buckaroos!

Pictures should be posted in the next week or so. Everyone else should post their pictures or send them to me so that they can be listed on the honor roll.

WINNER WINNER, CHICKEN DINNER!!!!

San Ramon, California.......Update for Mustache Month 2008….The California participants of this national mustache contest came together Friday night at the Raccoon Saloon to celebrate and to determine who reigns supreme as the “top stache”. As has been the custom for each of the last three years, the winner is selected by the waitress in order to ensure an unbiased selection. In spite of extreme competition, it is no surprise that B.J. "Pops" Farnung was again selected as the best-of-the-best and continues to reign supreme for another year. Here, “Elena” is telling everyone that "Pops" is number 1!!!!

Its The Final Countdown!

The only thing that would make those big-haired, leather-clad, and hard-rocking guys from the band Europe more awesome would be mustaches. Still I think they capture the excitement of the end of Mustache Month well with the song "The Final Countdown". Hope its stuck in your head for the rest of the day.

Since September ended during the middle of the week, we voted by a resounding 6-4 margin that the celebration (often called the Mustachiebration) would be pushed until this weekend. I know for a few of us we may be extending it at least another week...if not for the rest of the year.

Anyway, since the end is near, here are your final instructions for Mustache Month:
  1. Get together with other mustachioed men to celebrate your accomplishment. If other men bold enough to grow a mustache can not be found then find men/women willing to honor you by wearing fake mustaches while you celebrate.

  2. Take picture of you and your crew celebrating your mustaches. Then either post them here or send me the photos at rarthun @hotmail.com so that you can be listed on the Mustache Month 08 Honor Roll Slide Show.

Wear them with pride these last few days, fellas! Its going to be a long year until we "get" to do this again.

It's hard not to feel like an underachiever when this is your genetics.

I'm not going to lie, it has taken me a while to come to terms with the fact that I may never have a mustache as glorious as either of these worn by my father. Easier to come to terms with is the fact that I will never wear a plaid tie and red jacket.
